Build Your Email Subscriber List Through Product Promotion

A client completed his first book recently and wants a tie-in with his existing website. He’s looking to create a specific place on the web to point people to so they can learn more about the book and click through to buy it.

I suggested that he use this as an opportunity to:

  • Provide extra value to visitors.
  • Get visitors more directly engaged with the book so they buy it.
  • Build his email subscriber list.

The strategy I proposed is straightforward:

  1. Create a Landing Page. This is a single page dedicated specifically to the book. It uses a sales-letter type of format and is written to grab the reader and get them to take action.
  2. Offer Free Information. Offer a free sample chapter in PDF format. This helps people see that the book is for them and acts as a hook to get them interested in buying.
  3. Ask for Their Email. My client worked very hard on this book. In giving away a sample chapter, he is giving a lot of value. It is fair that he asks for people’s email address in return. In fact, it makes the free information look even more valuable because users are trading something they value in order to get it. He isn’t going to spam them, so there is no harm to them in giving him their email. To do this, he can use an autoresponder.
  4. Create an Amazon Affiliate Link. He should sign up for an associate account on Amazon, then create an affiliate link to his book. This way he gets a commission from any sales made using that link.
  5. Link to Amazon. The landing page we create AND his free download should feature calls to action in the form of buying his book. This call to action should have a link to the Amazon page. This makes it easy for the user so that they don’t have to search for the book or go hunting for the link.

Information marketers have used this formula for years. It covers the high-level goals my client has and also works to get visitors more responsive to his message while building one of his most powerful and valuable assets: his email subscriber list.
